Notes From A Small Island

Notes from a Small Island
Notes from a Small Island by Bill Bryson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Bryson provides a lot insights and comedic moments out of what he sees. Even though he’s sometimes of an outsider, he soon catches up with the local scene on his journey around the country. His visits consists of journeying to his destination to have a look around and figure out what it’s most famous for and to make his own opinion of any stereotypes. He looks at the odd byelaws of the traditional guesthouse compared to the modern rules of today while examining if Britain has lost its culture through the popular rise of the American chains. In between, he examines the lives and friendliness of the locals, their Britishness depending on where he is, as well as their touristic habits. There’s a bit of process analysing which seems antiquely compared to that of today, but this book was published before the internet was made easier for the mobile traveller.
