Can a city work with ancient architecture and modern functional
buildings blended together? Will the infrastructure be able to cope with the
demand? Or will it need to be abandoned together to make way for the new? If
the ancient sites are to be admired, people will want modern facilities for
better convenience. This means that space will have to be treated for them to
be preserved, and these areas also need to be maintained. A case in point is
the American tourist visiting Edinburgh and remarking how fitting it is that
the Scottish built their castle next to the train station. But too many facilities
without monitoring the ancient sites is a chance for crime and vandalism to occur,
especially in times of political unrest. And if these sites aren’t encouraging
the visitors that you want, you need to get rid of them or see about preserving
them elsewhere. Sometimes you must make way for change.
