There came a loud thump. The coffin had started to shake. Something inside realised it was trapped. A crowd gathered and a debate started. Was it humane to let loose whatever was stuck inside or was it no longer human meaning that it would be safer to contain it? Scraping had turned into banging as the coffin rocked on its pedestal. It was secure enough, but should it fall off there was a great chance that it could smash. Everyone knew the possibility but fear had gripped everyone and no-one had the courage to disturb it in case they triggered some unseen preliminary reaction. As the coffin continued to vibrate it slid closer to the edge and the head started to tilt toward the ground. At one point a stout man started to edge forward with his arms outstretched but a loud thunderclap fired across the valley as if some forgotten omen forbade it. All eyes turned to the skies but a smaller bang refocused them upon the pedestal where it was bare and there was silence.
