On our way down to Pembrokeshire, we called off the dual
carriageway to stretch our legs at Raglan Castle. It’s one of those ruins that’s
still great to go and explore. The car park is centred around a green with
hedgerows over the turret walls. The moat is very impressive, and how the
castle contains its moat with bridges, but it’s a shame that you can’t access
the towers, though not much of them remain. But they have tried to decorate
what has remained with stone props. I love the turret tops; there’s no
practical reason for them to be built apart from being architecturally pleasing,
though I suppose they could be supports for the ramparts. There’s also lots to
explore in the chapel. Where the floors have been removed, you can see the
original fireplaces that are still set in the walls. There’s also some interest
methods of cooking in the kitchen and some great dispense methods in the underground
pantry.
