Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier

This is a timeless classic. There’s the usual naturalistic imagery, but there’s also a sense of haunting from the protagonist’s perspective as she remains a mysterious observer of the events that transpire. It’s the tale of a deceased societal character that’s regarded as a goddess loved by everyone, and there’s very little cruelty depicted in her actions until they’re revealed towards the end of the tale, while the protagonist makes her attempt for freedom, happiness and independence in a bitter twist from a life of serving a snob to being treated as one. There are hints but few are afraid to come forward for fear of losing their position. Her passing could even be seen as merciful if the full truth were learnt. I thought the conclusion was a bit sudden, but the reader has to bear in mind the context of the whole book as it loops round in a circle and demands a second glance to make full sense. Genius.
