If we didn’t know what was going on, we might have been
slightly worried. We could see people in costume inside tending to a fireplace
in the background. We hoped that they knew what they were doing, but why did
they need smoke for a show? It was unlikely that they’d trained the birds to
put the fire out. Maybe it was someone’s lunch that had got out of control. They
might have caught a nice bit of fish and they didn’t want visitors to cotton
onto the same idea, so they made a smokescreen to hide behind. A fire wouldn’t
be easy to put out in this weather, and I can’t see a chimney on the building. Did
we need the theatrics? Did the boat run on steam? Or was it something that the
birds expected to help them perform in the show? Perhaps a dragon was going to
emerge.
