In medieval times, it could be a man with a knife. After all,
they were designed to protect the residents from the enemy. These days, you’re
more likely to find a man busking or selling refreshments or souvenirs. I doubt
the spotlight was there. At night it might cast a shadow to give a clue that
someone was approaching, and in daylight the sun would probably do the same. In
modern times, I’m not sure if the slate is indicative of restoration work from
passing vandalism, or if it’s purposefully placed there to reflect the
spotlight. That cable could pose as a bit of a trip hazard though. The dry
grass could also be hiding a pit which takes us to our deaths below the fence
and bushes. But venture on we must, there is plenty to see, even if it’s all
wired up to power a murderous robot around the corner.
