I’ve never in my life known a hamster to squeak. They might have squeaked when they get alarmed or when they’re in need of help. Even when they’re eating out of my hand or having a nibble out of the bowl, they’re usually quite silent. Sometimes I did have to wake them to make sure that they were still OK or that they hadn’t escaped. The two noises that I associate with them was the turning of the wheel at odd times in the night and gnawing on the cage bars, which was either to trim their teeth or an attempt to gnaw through and escape. Maybe their teeth were too big to allow them to physically squeak. The only thing that I can think of was that I had my ears full of wax at the time, which was most of my life during my childhood. Either that or I was a very good hamster owner.
