Once we’d been served out first refreshments, we climbed to
the top deck for a more entertaining view. The hills were naturally curved like
giant camel humps with blotches of green hair on them. I half expected to see a
blue hedgehog running up and down them. Along the way, we got a snapshot of a
life that we’d never think of. A fisherman had built a raft solely out of bamboo
canes and was using nothing more than a garden trimmer to power it as an engine.
We passed pagodas and lighthouses and people walking their dogs on quiet pebble
beaches while buffalo grazed in the distance. Back downstairs, our meal was about
to be served. It was typical Chinese noodles but it may as well have been
airplane food bought from a dodgy Chinese takeaway. At least we had comfortable
seats to enjoy the rest of the voyage in.
