This is less of a tale of travel and more of a battle of the soul. The realism and uncertainty is wonderfully captured by the narrator with each situation. It can be a bit morbid and vulgar in places, especially in the beginning when you have such an elegant introduction to Ray’s plight. The prologue is a bit off the timeline; and it’s more like an excerpt rather than an introduction. Towns aren’t given favouritism unless they have nice people within them. I also like the idea of abandoning their plan halfway through with an attempt to face reality before returning to the journey later in the story. They’ve got the experience but they’re worried about the stamina to cope, and don’t offer much in the way of practical advice. There’s also a nice humanitarian approach to homelessness and a brief discussion that it’s not always the homeless at fault.
