Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card

Seventh Son (Tales of Alvin Maker, #1)
Seventh Son by Orson Scott Card
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

I had a vivid dislike of this book from the outset because of its hillbilly narrative. Luckily, it was lost when we’re drawn into the rescue scene. There seems to be a lot of folklore about a seventh son, but no-one seems to expand upon what the superstition is. Some of the sons aren’t really described other than for their functions. I liked the idea of Peggy, but she seemed to be lost as a side character as the book progressed. It would have been interesting to see the children attend a service to see why they’d dislike it so much. Instead, we’re forced to draw conclusions for ourselves. But we do get good insights of how these communities operate; especially from people who focus on the rural areas who are so far from home. You’d think that they’d want to stay in the cities to influence more people though. But maybe this is background knowledge for the next in the series.
